What is a reverse balayage?

Updated: Oct 13

A reverse balayage is a technique used to breakup a colour (usually a lighter colour all over) to create dimension by adding pockets of depth. For example if a guest who usually has a full head of blonde highlights and wants to have more dimension in her hair, a reverse balayage technique is great for this. The lighter pieces can still be foiled depending on the roots. Then a darker colour is usually applied all over to the rest of the hair. A more lived in colour can still be created by applying a darker colour to the root area first and then foiling the lighter pieces and then going in with the darker colour all over the hair which is left out if the foils.

This is a great way of going darker and creating a statement hair colour without having to go really dark and are many different ways/techniques to achieve this look. By using either a demi or semi permanent colour you can still create these looks and have it fade out as you shampoo your hair should you wish to go lighter again.

I think is perfect for anyone who is already quite light and wanting to go darker over the winter and lighter for the summer.
