A guide on how to blow dry your hair.

Let's face it we have all been there haven't we?! We watch our hairdresser create that perfect blow dry and think 'Yeah I can do that easy!'. Until we have that first shampoo at home and attempt to do it ourselves.

The key to a perfect blow out is to to invest in good tools and products. There's no point in buying that £15 hairdryer that takes ages to dry your hair and that £20 straightener that looses heat and dries your locks out. No you need to invest wisely, ask your hairdresser for recommendations to get the perfect blow out. I would recommend a decent hairdryer with a good watt which is powerful. The more powerful the hairdryer the smoother and longer lasting your blow out will be.

Products: Depending on how you want to style your hair (sleek/smooth or volumed) will depend on what products you apply. There's a reason why hair salons recommend professional products and it's not because we want to take all your money! it's because supermarket products tend to be laced with this, that and the other which doesn't do much for your hair except dry it out and leave a coating on your hair. Invest in a professional shampoo and conditioner followed by styling and finishing products that will help your blow out to last until the next time you shampoo your hair. Remember that the same brand of products work better together rather than using separate brands together. This is because these brands are usually following a step by step and if you actually notice they are coloured or numbered so that you are using them correctly.

The right brush: Choose a brush or brushes that will help to blow dry your hair the way you want it. A round brush will not only smooth the hair but will also help add volume and a flat brush will help to smooth the hair flat making it nice and sleek ready to use your straighteners after.

Technique: It's important to understand the technique that is needed to achieve a good blow out. Again ask your hairdresser the best way to do this.

I usually explain it like this:

  • Rough dry your hair at the roots first then the mid lengths and ends using your fingers at the roots to help separate the hair and allow air to flow through and dry quicker.

  • Always use a nozzle and point the hairdryer down from roots to ends. This will allow the cuticles to lay flat and hair will appear shinier.

  • Once 85% dry, section the hair off into small sections starting at the back and begin blow drying with a brush. Wrap the hair over and around the brush, pointing the hairdryer down gliding the brush down as close to your body as possible. Or for volume pull the hair brush up. This will allow for a more smoother look and a less messy hairstyle!

  • Once you have a blow dried style finish off with the cool setting to close the cuticles and lock in that style! You can finish off with straighteners or tongs to give it that polished look and then add your finishing products or just add the products.

Et voila! You have created the perfect blow out!
