10 tips on keeping your blonde blonde!

If you're a blonde babe or someone who has had their hair lightened, then there are a few things you can do to keep your mane looking fresh.

1. Use a purple or blue shampoo - depending on the tone of your hair use these shampoos to counteract any warmth in your hair. Just remember purple shampoo is used to neutralise any yellow tones and blue shampoo is used to neutralise any orange tones. This will keep your colour from looking brassy.

2. Book in for a toner every 6 - 8 weeks - toners are great for refreshing a colour and keeping your hair from looking brassy. You would mainly book in for a toner if your colour had faded ie highlights or balayage.

3. Stop smoking - yes thats right! Nicotine can discolour your lightened hair leaving it looking brassy and can actually cause staining on the hair which might not come out.

4. Use the right products - besides using purple/blue shampoo, use products that help your hair to stay fresh looking for longer. There are so many products out there for blonde/lightened hair that will not only keep your hair looking fresh but will also help to protect your hair. There are even products out there that help to remove hard water and copper from your hair.

5. Stop swimming - you don't have to stop swimming however protecting your hair from chlorine and other chemicals is really important. Chlorine and other substances can discolour your hair so it's important to wear a swimming cap. You can also help by washing your hair straight away to get rid of any harsh chemicals your hair may have absorbed.

6. Keep out of the sun as much as possible. Heat from the sun can not only alter the colour of your blonde but can cause damage too. You could use a leave in conditoner but this isn't going to make much of a difference. Instead use styling products with heat protection in them. Some shampoos and conditoners even have heat protectors in them too so worth investing in a good range. You can also wear a hair covering such as a hat to shade it away from the sun.

7. Change your environment where possible. Smoke and pollutants can discolour blondes so where possible change your environment or try to work with it by protecting your hair.

8. Use a tinted hair mask. There are so many colour masks out there used to help keep on top of your colour that also help to nourish and hydrate the hair as well as protect.

9. Use less heat. Using heated tools too much can cause your blonde to fade, discolour and even damage your hair. Instead opt to try and blowdry your hair after washing it so the hair is smooth and then use straighteners and tongs the days you really need to. Keep on top of curls by pin curling the hair and using some coloured mousse to help revive those curls, protect your hair and add a boost of colour.

10. Have a regular trim. I often here and see a lot of my blonde customers coming in for a trim only and feel their blonde looks refreshed. Regular cuts can help keep your blonde hair looking fresh and healthy.
